296452_10150358672073719_1412277200_nI’m super excited that my sister Melissa has agreed to come on board DanielleHirsch.com and blog with me.  What can I say about my lil‘ sis?  She is the most dedicated, beautiful woman I know. Melissa’s beauty truly shines from within and touches everyone she comes into contact with.  She is kind, giving and smart; freaking smart.  She has more degrees then anyone I know; RN, masters in business, and probably a few I don’t know about.  We have always been partners in crime as kids.  Basically, I would do something unruly and she would cover it up so my parents wouldn’t find out. What are little sisters for, right? She has always had my back and I have always had hers. I consider this a great gift and a sense of completion that she is my partner on this journey of well-being. I am so excited to share her with you. Please welcome my  sister, Melissa, to DanielleHirsch.com

ABOUT MELISSA

I have been an ER nurse for 14 years.  As a nurse my main goal was to heal, promote health and well-being.  I did an excellent job when it came to my patients but, when it came to me I was a big disaster.  I blamed my poor eating habits on my job, I worked long, busy and stressful 12-hour shifts.  I never had breaks and there was never anyone to cover you for lunch.  I basically ate on the run and ate anything I could get my hands on.  I wasn’t a large girl; after all I was on the run and on my feet for 12 hours 3 times a week.  However, I wasn’t a healthy girl. I never really realized what eating all this unhealthy, processed food did to my body, energy and overall well being, until my sister introduced me to a whole new way of eating.

Danielle has always been the healthy one in the family.  She loved to work out and I hated it.  She loved to try different interesting foods and I liked my comfort carbs.  The one thing we always had in common is our love to cook, experiment, and create in the kitchen.  One day my sister decided to go on a raw journey, eating all raw foods.  I was interested in what she was eating and loved the way she described how she felt and I especially loved how she looked.  I told her I did not think I could commit to a lifestyle of eating all raw, I am going to be honest was not a huge vegetable fan.  Danielle suggested I take it slowly and to check out a book, Get Naked, written by Diana Stobo. The day I read that book was the day my life changed forever.

After a week I felt amazing, I was so excited about the changes I saw in my body and the energy I had. I actually started to work out and loved it.  I was sleeping 6 hours a night and waking up feeling refreshed and energized.  Work became less stressful and I realized with a little preparation, I could eat healthy at work. I started researching other raw books and alternative ways of eating.  I completely changed my eating habits and my way of living.  My sister was there for me every step of the way coaching and guiding me through this journey.  I started experimenting with recipes in the kitchen and quickly became passionate about making foods that are good for you and don’t make you feel deprived.  A year later, I am still excited to try and create new recipes and share them with my sister.  We discuss recipes that don’t taste quite right and she suggests substitutions or ideas.  We make a great team. Danielle and I have a goal of making eating healthy and living healthy an easy journey.  We want to heal mind, body and soul.

I am so looking forward to taking on this journey with my sister, blogging recipes and information we learn along the way.  Weather you are an omnivore, vegetarian, vegan or gluten free you will find great recipes and information that will be beneficial to your health and well-being.

Inspiration for Life

Tuesday, January 15th, 2013

I have been running for a long time; with 2 kids and a career in television it seems as though I have been running around forever. I used to be on air talent for HGTV, showing the world how to design and get creative with their interiors. During my 10 years in television I never stopped exercising and taking care of my body. Last summer one of my girlfriends and I challenged each other. I agreed to take a yoga class with her if she would run with me. The last yoga class I took wasn’t for me, all I could think about were the things I needed to do after I got out of there. It was so slow and boring and I thought all yoga was like this. I reluctantly sucked it up and went with her. I was surprised, this class wasn’t like any kind of yoga I’ve ever done. The room was hot, 95 degrees hot! It was fast passed and challenging with balancing poses and inversions, OMG I was hooked. After my show ended it came so naturally what to do next in my life. I wanted to get deeper and redesign for the well-being. So now in addition to being a designer and color expert, I am now a certified yoga instructor and on the path to becoming a nutritionist. I love how intertwined design, beauty, travel, exercise and food are, it’s life. The tagline on my website reads “inspiration for interiors”, it will read “inspiration for life”. I’m devoting this website to design and well-being walking hand in hand. After all, a house is not a home unless it contains food and fire for the mind as well as the body. Let’s inspire each other.

Here are a few people and things that inspire me…..

Karens Living/Dining room makeover.

Saturday, May 21st, 2011

Every month last year I teamed up with Dutch boy Paints to host an internet program called Restore My Decor.  Participants upload photos of their troubled rooms and I picked a winner that would receive a virtual makeover.  On the program I featured their room, suppling them with a drawing, color ideas, furniture suggestions as well as answering questions from the on line viewers.  These “virtual” winners had the potential to be the grand prize winner, which was a  to complete a room makeover buy me personally.  When I featured Karen and her husbands living/dining room on the program little did we know that they would become the grand prize winners.  So, off to Columbus, Oh. I went with $4000 in my pocket to complete their traditional chic living room.

Living Room Before

When I visited Karens home she told me that they accumulated most of the furniture, it was way too bulky and took over the space.  Yet the dining area was scant and seemed disjointed. It needed to join the living/dining room spaces which was an issue because I only had $4000.   So I edited out a few pieces and added some chic, traditional elements.   The camel back sofa was in great condition, I liked it, so it stayed, which was great for the budget.  I shopped for a lot of accessories on line (I was relieved they were all there when I arrived)  and did a little shopping in Colombus (Great shopping by the way).

Homeowners painting used for design inspiration

Karen has a painting that means a lot to her and wanted it incorporated into the room. This became the design inspiration. A common mistake that some people make when designing a space around an object is taking it too literally. For example, the frame around Karen’s painting is gold but using too much gold would overwhelm the design and look garish.  I actually steered clear of any gold and incorporated antique brass and darker color metals. For example, the dark metal on the really cool lamp shades and coffee table. Flanking the sofa with darker wood like the espresso colored side tables, allows each furniture piece to stand out individually. I hung sconces on either side of the painting to stretch out it’s size so it didn’t appear to be lost on the large wall. The wing back chairs with solid oak legs and exposed frames with burnt oak drifted finish adds a traditional artistic element. The two little leather and metal ottomans provide additional seating white keeping the room spacious. Obviously, the colors for the room were also pulled from the painting. I used a sophisticated Golden-grey on the walls and dusty blue for the accent color. I hung the blue curtains close to the top of the ceiling and about

10 inches wider then the window to create more drama in the room and showcases the floor to ceiling window. The zebra rug is a playful element but also suggestive of the painting as fur lines the jacket of Napoleons wife in the painting. Animal furs and animal skins were often used in the making of clothes in the 1800’s and was a sign of wealth and rank in society. I used a glass coffee table, so you can see the pattern of the rug, adorned with a few of Karens keepsakes.

Dining Room After

After all this, surprising enough, I did not reach my budget.  Yeah!  I was so excited that I  was able to furnish the Dining room for Karen and hubby as well. Off to the stores again.  I was even more elated when I found a chest of drawers that was the same dusty blue that I was using in the room.  I snatched that up quickly found a mirror to hang above it and found a new dining table.  Voila!!!

The end result,  Karen was over the moon and even went as far to call me magical.  I had so much fun with this project.  A big thanks to Dutch Boy for making it possible.  Stay tuned for Restore my Decor in 2011, streaming in May.   You could be the next grand prize winner.
